Chinese Blue and White Pottery

This piece I believe resembles the blue and white reliquary in class because of its designs and Asian influence with the chrysanthemum blossom depicted on the outside. I would guess that this particular piece originated from China, but was produced in more recent years. The reason for this is because traditional, ancient Chinese blue and white pottery is normally more detailed and white space is often filled up with designs. In more recent years, though, it is simply not feasible to spend so much time on one piece, and therefore many of the pottery pieces produced today lack much of the detail these pieces once possessed. Still, they are very beautiful, but simply are now available to the middle-class family because not so much effort has to be put into making and designing each piece. The piece in class could also have in fact not been produced in China, and may be a piece created in Europe. After the Europeans became infatuated with the blue and white pottery of China, they also tried to copy this type of pottery. What resulted was a less detailed, but very similar type of pottery. The reason why I am eluding to the fact that the piece in class may be European is because of the depiction of a European ship and Roman letters. It is very hard to tell, though, because the Chinese began to cater to the European markets, and would purposely depict items the Europeans could identify with. For these reasons, it is hard to tell where the blue and white piece in class came from, but most definitely its creation was influenced by the Chinese who created the piece pictured above.
